Those were days of joy. Records of a united, happy family who made a point of celebrating life's little moments. Toasts at the table, walks in the park, spontaneous smiles, matching outfits, and the affection evident in every photograph. This was the routine of Mônica, Thiago, Thayla, and Ezequiel. But this family's happiness was brutally interrupted on February 14, 2026. At kilometer 492 of the BR-116 highway, in Inhapim, a very serious accident forever changed the story of those traveling with the dream of reuniting with family and experiencing another special moment together. The tragedy caused the death of Thiago Santos Moura, 31, and the couple's children, Thayla Costa Moura, 10, and Ezequiel Costa Moura, just 4. Mônica was the only survivor. Months later, in photographs and videos sent to the Super Canal newsroom, she shares memories that today carry an even deeper meaning. In one of the accounts, Mônica wrote: "Our last photo on the day of the accident. The trip was super peaceful, we were all happy and anxious to arrive at our destination to see our parents again and celebrate Ezequiel's birthday, which would be on February 16th (he would be 5 years old)." In another record, she recalls a simple custom, but full of affection: "I loved being 'tacky' with them. Going out matching colors." When speaking of her husband, she summarizes in a few words the feeling that remains alive: "The great love of my life!" Now, in addition to facing grief, Mônica seeks justice. On the morning of this Thursday (23), the Public Prosecutor Jonas Linhares, from the 2nd Public Prosecutor's Office of the District of Inhapim, informed that the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais filed charges against the 36-year-old driver, identified as responsible for the accident. According to the prosecutor, during her testimony, Mônica stated that, moments before the collision, Thiago commented that the vehicle ahead was attempting an improper overtaking maneuver. Shortly afterward, the impact occurred, destroying an entire family. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the investigations indicated that the accused driver attempted to overtake in a prohibited area. Unable to complete the maneuver, he returned to his own lane, causing the car driven by Thiago to collide with the rear of the vehicle. With the impact, the family's car left the road, fell into the Caratinga River, and became completely submerged, resulting in the death of three occupants. The complaint will be analyzed by the 1st Court of the Inhapim District. If accepted by the Court, the driver may be subject to trial by jury. The Public Prosecutor's Office also requested the precautionary suspension of the accused's driver's license, disqualification from driving any motor vehicle, and the establishment of a minimum amount for reparation of damages caused to the victims and their families. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the driver's conduct goes beyond negligent traffic offenses and qualifies as intentional homicide, a situation in which the driver assumes the risk of causing the result. From now on, it will be up to the Judiciary to analyze the complaint, decide on its acceptance, and define the next steps in the criminal proceedings.
