Grand Canyon, Hike Monument Creek Vista to The Abyss

If fear of heights is a concern maybe this is not for you. The Grand Canyon is dramatic; but the cliffs and overlooks between Monument Creek Vista and The Abyss are plainly incredible. As we hike along the rim it is clear that concentration is important. Long ago; I learned to watch where I walk then stop to enjoy the views; not both. Great idea as one wrong step makes a difference. As Helicopters flew to and from The Phantom Ranch on The Colorado River then to Tusayan's Grand Canyon National Airport the scale becomes clear. They disappear and reappear as only their sound is evidence of their passing. Recommending this portion of the Rim Trail is easy and heartfelt. Yes, it is very well worth the effort; the rewards are very memorable. As always, plan and prepare for the day. Begin hydrating the day before, bring plenty of water and high carbohydrate salty snacks. Take frequent breaks under the many shaded overlooks and enjoy the journey.
