The hike begins from Zermatt with the cable car via Furi to the mountain station at Schwarzsee. The beautifully situated Schwarzsee, with its "Maria zum Schnee" chapel, rewards visitors with a calm water surface and a magnificent reflection of the Ober and Unter Gabelhorn (as seen from the south shore). The climb begins with an easy ascent to Hirli (2,889 meters) and later overcomes a rocky step. The route continues westward along the cliff face over rocky terrain to a distinctly steep section. There is also a metal staircase with step rails to climb, which gives a feeling of being airy and could be a challenge for those with a head for heights. The partially exposed path through scree terrain ends at the Hörnli Hut - arguably the most important point in Zermatt.
