From the hotel balcony, we have a magnificent view of the Matterhorn. And it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. The sky is blue and cloudless. From here, we take the cable car up to the idyllic Schwarzsee (Black Lake). There, our actual ascent to the Hörnlihütte (Hörnli Hut) begins, the base camp for many who want to climb the summit of the Matterhorn. The trail is 9 km long, and we climb 750 meters in altitude. Arriving at the mountain station, we are speechless. The high alpine world around us is simply breathtaking. Glaciers and 4,000-meter peaks rise into the sky everywhere. From Schwarzsee, we can see the small chapel built by mountaineers who successfully summited the Matterhorn. A symbolic place where even today many climbers pause to give thanks after successfully completing the ascent and descent and returning safely. Our hiking trail leads us first through lush green alpine meadows before becoming steeper and rockier. The views become increasingly breathtaking, and we can hardly tear ourselves away. We cross dizzying footbridges and steep steps. Surefootedness and a head for heights are essential in places! It gets particularly exciting when the railings end and the path drops away steeply. This can be a bit of a mental challenge. Otherwise, the trail is well-maintained. Particularly steep sections are made easier by stairs and stone steps. The altitude does make itself felt, so you might find yourself quite breathless, but at least there's no climbing involved on the way to the hut. With every step, we get closer to our destination. Our gaze sweeps across the impressive Monte Rosa Glacier and other majestic peaks such as the Dom, the Allalinhorn, and the Dufourspitze, the highest point in Switzerland. And then, finally, we catch our first glimpse of the Hörnlihütte – our destination for the day. The effort was well worth it! Once we reach the top, we treat ourselves to a well-deserved break and fortify ourselves with a typical Swiss rösti. It simply tastes twice as good up here! Afterwards, we take a look around the rooms of the Hörnlihütte and hear some interesting stories from the hut warden, including the fact that he himself has stood on the summit 120 times. Every year, 2,500 to 3,000 people attempt to climb the Matterhorn. Breakfast is served at 4:00 a.m., and at 4:20 a.m., the first climbers set off. The mountain guides from Zermatt start first, followed by all the other guides, and only at the very end are the climbers allowed to begin without a guide. We hike a few more meters. It's about a 10-minute walk to the foot of the Matterhorn. Here, we touch the mountain that was once considered unconquerable and feel the pride and awe before this majestic natural wonder. The Matterhorn was first climbed in 1865, but even today it remains a formidable challenge. The story of Edward Whymper and his tragic first ascent reminds us just how dangerous and yet fascinating this mountain is.
