The 'Borrowed' Polish 8x8 That Proved Itself in Afghan Combat When Heavier Vehicles Failed

The KTO Rosomak survived direct RPG-7 strikes in Afghanistan that destroyed British and American vehicles on adjacent routes. Poland's licensed build of the Finnish Patria AMV deployed with Task Force White Eagle to Ghazni Province in 2007, armed with a 30mm Bushmaster II autocannon, steel-composite armour, QinetiQ RPGNet cage protection and the American Duke counter-IED jamming system. It completed over 900 combat patrols in one of the deadliest provinces in the Afghan war. Every Rosomak sent to Afghanistan was hit at least once by small arms or anti-armour fire. Over half required factory-level repairs. Only eight were permanently lost. The hull never failed under RPG impact. Taliban fighters called it the Green Devil. Polish soldiers called it the Wolverine. Rosomak S.A. built over 1,090 vehicles at their factory in Siemianowice Śląskie, Poland, across sixteen configurations including infantry fighting vehicles, 120mm mortar carriers, ambulances and command posts. The programme reached 94 percent Polish content by 2012. Two hundred vehicles have since been transferred to Ukraine.
