The 'Primitive' African Howitzer That Set a World Record No NATO Gun Has Ever Beaten

The G6 Rhino is the six-wheeled South African howitzer that outranged every gun NATO could field — and it was built by a nation under a total arms embargo. Cut off from Western and Soviet weapons alike, South Africa didn't copy foreign artillery. It engineered a 155mm self-propelled howitzer so advanced that a G6-52 later fired a shell 76 kilometres downrange — the longest range ever achieved by a conventional 155mm gun on earth. Developed under apartheid-era isolation by Armscor and built by Denel Land Systems on a mine-protected chassis by OMC, the G6 was purpose-built for the vast distances and landmine threat of the Angolan Border War. At Cuito Cuanavale, a handful of these guns shelled targets from beyond enemy reach and destroyed four MiG-21 fighter jets on the ground before they could take off.
