Im Inneren des Leopard 2A7 – Deutschlands bester Panzer
Inside the Leopard 2A7 — Germany's best main battle tank and the pinnacle of a 50-year tank tradition. Nineteen nations use it, including Germany, Canada, Turkey, Poland, Spain, Norway, and, since 2023, Ukraine. It weighs 67 tons, travels at 68 km/h, and its four-man crew sits in fully air-conditioned comfort under modular composite armor. At its heart: the 120 mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun, which delivers programmable DM11 ammunition with pinpoint accuracy at ranges of over three kilometers. The journey began in 1965 with the Leopard 1 — Germany's first post-war main battle tank. The Leopard 2 followed in 1979, and from 1985 onwards, the record-breaking 2A4 variant with 2,125 units produced. The A5 introduced wedge armor in 1995, the A6 the L/55 in 2001. Since 2014, the A7 has been the top-of-the-line version—equipped with air conditioning, an auxiliary generator, programmable ammunition, and modern networking. In the Strong Europe Tank Challenge, the Leopard 2 has repeatedly defeated the US M1 Abrams and Challenger 2. Canadian A6M CANs proved their worth in Afghanistan, Turkish A4s suffered losses in Syria, and in Ukraine, the Leopard 2 has been one of the most important Western main battle tanks against Russian T-90s and T-72s since 2023. 77 years after the Panzer IV, the A7 stands at the pinnacle of German tank engineering. In the video, we show its interior. What makes the Leopard 2A7 the world's best Western main battle tank? How does the programmable DM11 ammunition work? And how are German tanks faring in Ukraine? Find the answers in this look inside a legend. 📌 CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction: 19 Nations, One Tank 01:30 From Panzer IV to Leopard 1: 1955 New Beginning 03:30 Leopard 2 (1979): The Successor 05:00 2A4 to 2A6: The Evolution 07:00 A7: 67 Tons of Precision 09:00 Rheinmetall 120mm L/55 10:30 Composite Armor and Air Conditioning 12:00 MTU 1,500 HP and 4 Men 13:30 Strong Europe Tank Challenge 15:00 Afghanistan 2007-11 16:30 Turkey in Syria 2016-18 18:00 Ukraine 2023: The Turning Point 20:00 The Hidden Weaknesses 22:00 Legacy: 77 Years Tank Engineering ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🎯 ABOUT THE LEOPARD 2A7 The Leopard 2A7 is the main variant of the Leopard 2 in the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) — manufactured by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), now KNDS. It entered service in 2014 and is the further development of the Leopard 2, which was introduced in 1979. Dimensions: 10.97 m long with the gun at the front, 3.75 m wide. Combat weight: 67.5 tons. MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel engine with 1,500 hp. 68 km/h on roads, 50 km/h off-road. 450 km range. Four crew members: commander, gunner, loader, and driver. The main armament is the 120 mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun—a six-meter barrel. It fires DM63 APFSDS kinetic energy penetrators and the DM11 programmable airburst ammunition, which detonates over the target. It is also equipped with two 7.62 mm MG3A1 machine guns, coaxial and optionally mounted in a turret. The armor protection consists of modular composite armor with reactive modules. The A7 upgrade introduced full air conditioning for desert operations, auxiliary power for silent observation, and improved sensors and networking. The story began in 1955 with the founding of the Bundeswehr—initially with the US M47 and M48 Patton. The Leopard 1 followed in 1965, Germany's first post-war main battle tank, with 6,485 units built and exported to 12 nations. The Leopard 2 arrived in 1979, and from 1985 onward, the 2A4, with 2,125 units, dominated the Bundeswehr. The A5 in 1995 brought wedge armor, and the A6 in 2001 introduced the L/55. Nineteen nations operate the Leopard 2: Germany, Austria, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine. In the Strong Europe Tank Challenge, it repeatedly landed on the podium—often ahead of the US M1 Abrams and Challenger 2. In combat, Canadian Leopard 2A6M CANs proved their worth in Afghanistan from 2007 to 2011, while Turkish 2A4s suffered losses in Syria from 2016 to 2018. Since 2023, 18 German Leopard 2A6s and Polish 2A4/A5s have been fighting against Russian tanks in Ukraine. 77 years after the Panzer IV, the A7 stands as the pinnacle of German tank engineering. The A7V is the current Bundeswehr version, with the A8 planned for 2025.
