Symptomatische Medikamente kommen zur Anwendung, um belastende Symptome bei der ALS zu reduzieren. Dabei kann es sich um unterschiedliche Symptome handeln, die durch Medikamente gelindert werden: Speichelfluss (Sialorrhoe), Spastik, Faszikulationen (Muskelzuckungen unter der Haut), Muskelkrämpfe, unkontrolliertes Lachen und Weinen (motorische Disinhibition), Sprechstörung (Dysarthrie), Herabgestimmtheit (depressive Symptomatik), Angst, Atemanstrengung oder Appetitminderung. Diese Medikamente standen bisher nicht im Mittelpunkt der öffentlichen Aufmerksamkeit – daher sind die therapeutischen Möglichkeiten und neueren Entwicklungen der symptomatischen Medikation ein gesondertes Thema im ALS-Podcast. These can be different symptoms that are alleviated by medication: Salivation (sialorrhea), spasticity, fasciculations (muscle twitching under the skin), muscle spasms, uncontrolled laughter and crying (motor disinhibition), speech disturbance (dysarthria), depressed mood (depressive symptomatology), anxiety, respiratory distress or reduced appetite.
