Founder of the National Collective of Associations for Obese People (CNAO) more than twenty years ago, member of the National Food Council, vice-president of the ARCOM food charter commission, and recipient of the National Order of Merit: Anne-Sophie Joly has made her fight against obesity a public cause. But behind these titles, there is first and foremost a patient-expert. Anne-Sophie shares her journey against obesity from the inside, with all that it entails: medical treatment, weight regain, and the judgment she has faced. It is this dual legitimacy—personal experience and institutional recognition—that gives her words a rare power. In this episode, we take the time to deconstruct the most persistent misconception: that obesity is simply a lack of willpower. Obesity is now recognized as a chronic disease by the World Health Organization. We explore its mechanisms: adipose tissue as a true organ, the decrease in basal metabolic rate, low-grade inflammation, and neurotransmitter metabolism disorders. We also discuss what Anne-Sophie calls the most stigmatized and, paradoxically, the most tolerated illness. She is familiar with fatphobia in all its forms: emotional, professional, and academic. She recounts, frankly but without bitterness, what it means to live in a body that society judges before even listening to it. Finally, we look back on twenty-six years of advocacy and very concrete victories: access to healthcare and the CSO centers, institutional recognition, and the report on discrimination submitted to public authorities. These are all battles fought with unwavering conviction: "A life is worth a life." A sincere, moving, and sometimes even heartbreaking exchange. I hope it will help change perceptions of obesity.
