Bolivia launched its flexible exchange rate system on Monday, June 29, with the dollar at 9.73 bolivianos, ending 15 years of the fixed exchange rate of 6.96. The Ministry of Economy argues that the measure simply "brings order to reality" because, in practice, the parallel dollar was already trading at up to 20 bolivianos and dominating prices, inflation, and remittances. The government aims to curb speculation and restore confidence. With a single official exchange rate, it asserts that uncertainty will be reduced, prices will stabilize, and remittances of more than $1 billion will return to the financial system because "they will now yield their true value."
