José María Morelos was a priest who joined the movements that were beginning to emerge in the Viceroyalty of New Spain following the fall of the Bourbon monarchy in Spain and the outbreak of the Spanish War of Independence. He joined the march initiated by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla with the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores). Morelos would eventually set aside his ecclesiastical career to focus on the struggles for Mexican independence, becoming an insurgent leader renowned for his military and political achievements. He presided over the Congress of Anáhuac (also known as Chilpancingo), where the short-lived Constitution of Apatzingán was signed, and was later appointed President of the Supreme Mexican Government, a position he held until shortly before his execution.
