A Foggy Morning at Diggers Rest; Metro, V/Line & Steam Trains - Melbourne Transport

In this video we visit Diggers Rest, a quiet station on the Sunbury Line in the town of Diggers Rest north-west of Melbourne. We find ourselves at the station on a relatively foggy Sunday morning where we see various trains passing, including Metro Comeng and Siemens trains, and some V/Line Vlocities and locomotive N467 on the up Swan Hill service. However it wasn't a typical Sunday morning as on this particular day Steamrail Victoria were operating shuttles between Watergardens and Sunbury with steam locomotive A2 986 and the Tait electric multiple unit. We see this train multiple times during my visit. Diggers Rest station opened on the 2nd October 1859, around eight months after the line from Sunshine to Sunbury was constructed. Diggers Rest was named after the area being a rest stop for diggers heading to the goldfields near Bendigo during the Victorian Gold Rush. Today Diggers Rest is a sizeable town wedged between Melbourne's north western suburbs and the satellite city of Sunbury. The station underwent a major upgrade in 2012 when electrification was extended from Watergardens to Sunbury, with electrified Metro services commencing on the 18th November 2012. The adjacent Old Calder Highway level crossing is currently in the process of being grade separated with construction of a new road overpass underway just south of the station.
