Trains at Cowan; Passenger, Steam & Freight Trains - NSW Transport

In this video we visit Cowan, a small station on New South Wales' Main North Line around 49km north of Central station. It is the first station on the line outside of the suburban area as you head away from Sydney. Until 1992 suburban services terminated at Cowan until they were curtailed to terminate at Berowra where they still terminate today. Cowan is served by Sydney Trains intercity services on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line. This video was filmed across several days in April 2024. At the time the V Sets and Oscar's (H Sets) were still regular sites on this line with the brand new Mariyung (D Sets) yet to be introduced. We also see the XPT heading to Grafton, and a couple of freight trains. We also see steam trains 3526 and 6029 Beyer-Garratt heading to and from the Hunter Valley Steamfest. Cowan station opened in 1980. Cowan is most notable for being at the top of Cowan Bank, a steep 1 in 40 grade that's 8.3km; starting at sea level at Hawksbury River and rising up to 200 meters at Cowan. Back in the day bank engines used to push trains up the grade, and detach themselves at Cowan. This practice is no longer a thing, but even today the bank is known for stalling freight trains and causing delays on the line, and being the location for several rail accidents over the years.
