Thakurbarir Jhaler Jhol | Authentic Bengali Heritage Recipe | Rabindranath Tagore Era Traditional Niramish Curry Today we bring you an authentic and almost forgotten gem from the kitchens of the Tagore household – Thakurbarir Jhaler Jhol. This traditional Bengali vegetarian recipe, documented in Thakurbarir Ranna by Purnima Thakur, is a beautiful combination of seasonal vegetables, bori, aromatic spices, mustard oil, and ghee. Along with this heritage recipe, we take a nostalgic journey through the pages of Rabindranath Tagore's Sahaj Path, revisiting the childhood memories that shaped generations of Bengalis. Simple, flavorful, and deeply rooted in Bengal's culinary tradition, this dish pairs perfectly with hot steamed rice and can also be prepared as a Bhog recipe for Puja occasions. Ingredients 2 medium Potatoes (cubed) 250 g Pumpkin (cubed) 2 medium Brinjals/Eggplants (cubed) 1 medium Bottle Gourd (Lau), chopped Bottle Gourd Stalks (optional) Pumpkin Stalks (optional) 1 cup Thor (Banana Stem), finely chopped 2 Ridge Gourds (Jhinge), chopped 15–20 Bori (Sun-dried Lentil Dumplings) 3 Bay Leaves 1½–2 tbsp Panch Phoron 5–6 Green Chillies, slit 1½ tbsp Red Chilli Powder 1 tbsp Turmeric Powder 1 tbsp Cumin Powder 1 tbsp Coriander Powder Salt to taste Sugar to taste 2–3 tbsp Ghee Mustard Oil as required Water as needed Method ✔ Fry the bori and soak in water. ✔ Fry potatoes, pumpkin, and brinjal separately. ✔ Prepare a spice slurry with chilli, turmeric, cumin, coriander powder, and water. ✔ Temper mustard oil with bay leaves, panch phoron, and green chillies. ✔ Add lau, stalks, thor, and cook until softened. ✔ Add ridge gourd, potatoes, spice mixture, and salt. Cook covered. ✔ Add pumpkin, then brinjal and sugar. ✔ Finish with bori and ghee. ✔ Rest covered for 5–7 minutes before serving.
