I Rushed to Get the Boat Ready… Then Forgot to Enjoy the Trip

This week I’m working flat out to get the boat ready for our first proper trip with the new steering setup. I finish off the rudders, steering system and outboard control so we can finally get away, then we set off with the plan of seeing as much as possible while the weather gives us a chance. I wanted Sally to see the Isle of Mull, the Small Isles and more of this incredible west coast scenery, so I pushed hard on the first day to cover as much distance as we could. But as usual with sailing, the weather had other ideas. The forecast changed, and instead of having time to relax and enjoy the trip, I had to turn everything around and rush back the next day. It ended up teaching me a bigger lesson than I expected. I’ve spent most of my life focused on getting the next job done, assuming there will be time to enjoy things afterwards. But too often, by the time the job is finished, the chance has already passed and it’s straight on to the next task. So this episode is about boat work, steering upgrades, a short but beautiful sailing trip, and realising that sometimes the thing you’re rushing towards is the thing you’re accidentally missing.
