Boat Steering Conversion & A Maritime Festival

This week on Sailing Speireag, I continue the steering upgrade on our 1968 Iroquois Mk2 catamaran by tackling the rudder box conversion and working out how to adapt the old tiller setup for the new wheel steering system. There’s also a bit of practical problem-solving away from the boat, as I fit a new tyre to the wheel using only basic hand tools — not the easiest way to do it, but sometimes you just have to get the job done with what you’ve got. After the boat work, we head to Luggerfest, a traditional maritime festival with classic boats, working heritage vessels, and a proper old-school seafaring atmosphere. It was a good chance to step away from the refit for a while and enjoy some traditional boats, craftsmanship, and maritime history. As always, this is an honest look at bringing an old neglected catamaran back to life one job at a time, using practical skills, limited budget, and a lot of learning along the way. If you enjoy traditional boat work, old catamarans, practical repairs, and real-life refit progress, consider subscribing and following the journey.
