Taking Down The Genoa And Stopping Leaks

This week on Sailing Speireag we continue the slow process of bringing our long-neglected catamaran back to life. We start by taking down the genoa sail so the roller furling system can be serviced in an upcoming episode. With the sail off, it’s also a good opportunity to tackle a couple of leaks that have been bothering us, so we re-seal the stanchion plates and the window frames to keep the water out where it belongs. Then we jump in the car for a six hour drive down to Glasgow to pick out the stainless steel tubing that will be used to build a custom solar arch for the boat. The plan is to fabricate it ourselves and mount the solar panels properly so the boat can eventually become more self-sufficient. After that we head out for a small adventure to Troon Harbour, where something unexpected happens. For the first time since starting the channel we’re recognised in public by a subscriber who watches the videos. A small moment, but a pretty surreal one for us. This boat sat neglected for decades before we bought her sight unseen. Each week we’re repairing, rebuilding and slowly turning her back into a capable sailing boat.
