Can We Build a New Roof Entirely from Salvage? | Ugly Carport Makeover (Part 3)

This video is part of a series in which we're converting our ugly old carport into something more like an attractive garage. We then plan to knock through the wall to join it with the existing shed, and eventually that should create a whole new workshop space for us. In Part 3 we finally get to the really exciting bit: Adding the roof! The old roof was flat and ugly, and we want to try and switch that out for a much more attractive pitched roof, using all the same salvaged materials. Our Ugly Carport Makeover project all started after Storm Eowyn swept through Scotland and removed the metal roof from our carport, forcing us to make repairing it our next big project. Rather than replacing it like-for-like, we decided to rethink the entire structure. It was such a useful space, but a complete eyesore. In Parts 1 and 2 we dismantled the old ugly carport structure and reduced the steel frame it was built on to half the original size. Going forward, we will also be building up the walls, adding windows and doors that we hope to find at salvage or reclamation yards, and then painting our finished building. We're trying to keep everything as low cost and sustainable as we can. It's a place we never imagined we'd be able to call our own. The house and grounds are tired and in need of rejuvenation, but this is great for us because we love gardening and DIY projects that involve restoring old houses. We've also always loved the idea of starting a semi self-sufficient homestead as part of a more sustainable lifestyle.
