Bells & Mk.1 Barriers at Collingham (Cross Lane) Level Crossing, Nottinghamshire
Date filmed: Saturday the 8th of November 2025 Route: Nottingham to Lincoln Line Between Collingham (CLM) and Swinderby (SWD) Stations Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: Cross Lane, Collingham (NG23 7NY) A half-barrier level crossing in Collingham which has been rumoured for permanent closure for some time now. However, a new, replacement 30mph road, which connects up with Swinderby Road, was noticeably taking shape, built to bypass this crossing and divert traffic over the neighbouring ones, namely Collingham Station & Swinderby Road. This road opened at the end of May 2026, and the crossing was meant to permanently close on the 29th of May, but this never happened due to legal reasons and the crossing is still open with no known confirmed date of closure as of the time of upload. Another visit has been made. You'd expect it will happen soon, though, as this new road shouldn't've been built for nothing, and 'no-through road' signage is installed ready. The crossing here not only retains its 'penguin' barriers, but also loud, ringing, mechanical bells. Sadly, one of these has all but completely failed, and did not ring at all at the time of my visit. For stopping trains, the crossing won't activate until a Lincoln-bound train is leaving the station, effectively bringing them into a red signal every time. As low-risk as this crossing, in practice, is with so little use, the main reason of closure is likely due to the ease of a solution and to slash the maintenance costs driven up by ageing equipment here (these barriers are from the 1970s), although these millions of pounds spend on the new road would really have been better put elsewhere. Besides, there is no bridge diversion at all as part of the wildly expensive and overkill project, so all this will do is increase traffic over the neighbouring two crossings.
