Crispy Plantains And Juicy Steak Make The Jibarito A Chicago Icon | Legendary Eats

The influence of Puerto Rican cuisine and culture in Chicago led to the creation of the jibarito, a delicious fried-plantain sandwich. It was reportedly created in Chicago by Juan Figueroa at the restaurant Borinquen in 1996. Twenty-four years later, the sandwich has become a staple at Puerto Rican restaurants across the city. It combines meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese in between two fried plantains. It's all topped off with a large spoonful of garlic, producing an incredible combination of flavors. While many restaurants serve the jibarito, Jibaritos y Más has gained a reputation for having one of the best jibaritos in Chicago.
