El Jibarito [Smashed Plantain Steak Sandwich]

El Jibarito is a smashed plantain steak sandwich originating from the Humboldt section of Chicago, invented by Puerto Rican restaurateur Juan "Peter" Figueroa. I've been eating all my life (get it), but I never had a Jibarito steak sandwich until the making of this video! When I say this steak sandwich is one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth, I'm not kidding! I'm a Tostones (smashed green plantain) fan to begin with, but to use it as a replacement for bread slices...freaking genius! The Tostones are super crispy, a perfect complement to the tender seasoned steak and onion filling called Bistec Encebollado (Steak and Onions). El Jibarito is a foundational piece of Puerto Rican cuisine and an icon in Chi-Town fare! I highly recommend you try this recipe; you'll thank me later!
