I was a major in the former Soviet Army and was serving in Brest, Belarus. Since the fall of 1991, I have repeatedly tried to return home, but without success. Finally, I went on leave and told the regiment commander, whose deputy I was, that I would not return. Arriving in Moldova, I joined the Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade. Soon, together with other comrades, I was sent to the Dniester, where our division participated in the defense of the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. In 1992, on the Dniester, there was not an “internal conflict”, but a war of aggression by Russia against our country. The participation of the former 14th Army is a proven fact, and the ECHR ruling in the case “Ilașcu and Others against Moldova and Russia” unequivocally confirms the role that Russia played in triggering and supporting the aggression against our state. The presence of Russian troops on the territory of Moldova represents the greatest threat to the security of our state. Added to these are the force structures of the separatist regime, the so-called security forces, as well as the local leaders who exercise power in Tiraspol. However, the entire system relies on the Operational Group of Russian Troops (GOTR), a unit of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, which constitutes the military pillar of the separatist regime and the main guarantor of its maintenance. In the Kremlin, the Republic of Moldova is still viewed as a former province that must be brought back under control. But those times have passed. We are no longer under Russia’s boot and we no longer have leaders waiting for instructions at Putin’s door. The citizens of the Republic of Moldova have chosen their path: European integration. This is our path and we have no right to deviate from it. The European vector is the guarantee of our freedom, security and development. I am convinced that the European path will bring the Republic of Moldova and Romania closer and closer, until the border between us will remain just a memory. It is no coincidence that the unionist current is constantly growing. History follows its course. I have many friends in Romania and it has always been difficult for me to understand those Romanians who admire or worship Vladimir Putin. I told them a simple thing: if, God forbid, Putin's Russia were to reach the mouths of the Danube, you would no longer decide for yourself what to dance and what to sing. You would have to dance "Kazachiok" and sing "Katiusa", and the freedom you enjoy today would become just a memory. I am glad that many of those with whom I had these discussions understood the message. For those who have lived or known what Kremlin domination means, freedom is a value worth fighting for. I do not have a Romanian passport. But I firmly believe that the day of Reunification will come, and the border on the Prut will disappear.
