【豊後山歩】平治岳をゆく。｜Mt. Hijidake in Bloom

幾度もの噴火が大地を塗り替え、火砕流と熔岩が積み重なって、くじゅう連山はできあがった。木々さえ寄せつけぬ火山性の土壌は、今も山肌のいたるところに顔を出している。 そのような場所に、一種の植物が根を張った。 ミヤマキリシマ。ツツジ科の小低木は、火山の沈黙に付き合うように、気の遠くなる歳月をかけてこの山に広がっていった。人の歴史が始まる以前から、初夏のわずかな数日だけ、平治岳の斜面を紅紫色に染めてきた。 　五月三十一日。 　その日が、今年もやってきた。 The Kuju Range was built by fire. Eruption upon eruption, pyroclastic flows and lava hardening into layers — the volcanic soil that remains still resists the advance of trees across much of the slope. Into that landscape, one plant took hold. The Miyama Kirishima azalea, a low shrub of the rhododendron family, spread slowly across these mountains over an almost incomprehensible span of time, as if simply keeping the volcano company. Long before human memory, it has painted the flanks of Hijidake in purplish-pink for a few brief days each early summer. May 31st.
