【豊後山歩】万年山をゆく。｜Along the Bungo Ridgeline, in the Season of Pink｜ミヤマキリシマ

万年山（はねやま）は、まことに不思議な山である。 火山活動が遺した平らな山頂、いわゆる「メサ」の地形は、遠くから眺めればお盆をひっくり返したかのように茫漠としている。 初夏のこの季節、吉武台から西万年へと歩を進めれば、突如として眼前に狂おしいほどのピンクの絨毯が広がる。ミヤマキリシマの群生である。自然の悪戯か、あるいはこの山岳が秘める情熱の顕れか。 ハナグリ岩の裏手に回れば、古来「万年仏」と呼び習わされる仏の横顔が、今も静かにこの豊後の稜線を見守り続けていた。 外界の騒がしさから隔絶された玖珠の盆地。そこに流れる雅な空気を感じながら、ただ、歩く。 その一歩一歩の記憶を、ただ静かに、映像に閉じ込めた。 Mt. Haneyama is, in every sense, a peculiar mountain. Its summit — flattened by the slow violence of ancient volcanism into what geologists call a mesa — sits upon the horizon like an overturned tray, vast and unhurried, indifferent to the world below. In early summer, walking the ridge from Yoshitake-dai toward Nishi-Hane, one is stopped without warning. A carpet of pink — reckless, almost violent in its beauty — spreads across the mountainside without apology. This is the Miyama-Kirishima azalea in full colony. Whether it is a caprice of nature or the mountain's own mute passion made visible, one cannot say. Behind Hanaguri Rock, carved by neither chisel nor intention into the stone face, the profile of what generations of Bungo people have called the Manen Butsu — the Eternal Buddha — looks out still over the ridgeline. It has been looking out for a very long time. The Kusu Basin lies apart from the noise of the age. There is something unhurried in its air — something that belongs to an older current of time. Into that air, one simply walks.
