Se inauguró UPM 2: ¿Cuáles son los impactos de este hito para el país en su conjunto?
The largest productive investment in Uruguay's history was officially inaugurated yesterday. In the Paso de los Toros area, in the center of the country, President Luis Lacalle Pou and UPM executives cut the ribbon, symbolically opening the Finnish multinational's second pulp mill in Uruguay. The ceremony marked the culmination of a project that enjoys the support of the entire political spectrum. Negotiations for the project began during the Broad Front administration, but it was also supported by the forestry promotion policy initiated in Uruguay during Julio María Sanguinetti's first term as president, between 1985 and 1990. "Governments in Uruguay, with their different sensibilities, nuances, impulses, and ideologies, don't have any complexes about starting from scratch, and that generates confidence. There is a Constitution, laws, and contracts that will always be respected," he emphasized. The mill, which required an investment of US$2.7 billion, positions Uruguay among the world's leading pulp exporters. If we add to this the specialized pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo, inaugurated last year, plus the construction of the company's third eucalyptus nursery in Sarandí del Yí, Durazno, plus new infrastructure and local facilities in the interior of the country, the total investment in this project rises to US$3.47 billion. What will change from now on in the Pueblo Centenario and Paso de los Toros region? What are the impacts of yesterday's milestone for the country as a whole? We spoke with chemical engineer Marcos Battegazzore, Vice President of Operations for UPM in Uruguay, on this program.
