Making Tanghulu with My Nephews | Sweet Memories (and Burnt Fingertips!)
Have you ever tried making Tanghulu? While my nephews were visiting from the other end of the country, we decided to give this fun candied fruit treat a try! We had so much fun making it together, sampling different fruits, and creating another sweet summer memory. AND it's gluten free for this Celiac! One thing we learned? Use long skewers instead of toothpicks! 😄 I was the only one dipping the fruit into the hot sugar (I wanted to keep the boys safe), and let's just say... I ended up with a few burnt fingertips. Lesson learned! 🍓 Tanghulu Recipe Ingredients 2 cups sugar 1 cup water Fresh fruit, washed and completely dried (the sugar won't stick well if the fruit is wet) Ice water (in a bowl for dipping the finished fruit) Candy thermometer Long skewers (highly recommended!) Directions -Wash and thoroughly dry your fruit, then insert a skewer into each piece. -Prepare a bowl of ice water and set it aside. -Add the sugar and water to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Do not stir. -Insert a candy thermometer and continue cooking until the syrup reaches the hard crack stage (300°F / 150°C). -Remove the syrup from the heat. -Carefully dip each piece of fruit into the hot sugar syrup, coating it evenly. -Immediately dip the coated fruit into the bowl of ice water for a few seconds to harden the candy coating. Enjoy! A quick safety note: The sugar syrup is extremely hot, so the dipping step is definitely one for the grown-ups. I also recommend using long skewers instead of toothpicks to keep your fingertips safely away from the hot sugar. We only had toothpicks on hand, and... well... I'm a fine example of what not to do. 😆 I'd like to say I make these little mistakes so you don't have to... but the truth is, I'm just a little on the clumsy side. LOL.
