We Lost Almost All of Our Hens
This is not the video I expected to be making. I went out to collect eggs and immediately knew something was wrong. The nesting box door was standing wide open. The latch I thought was impossible to open was apparently not impossible after all. At first there were no eggs. Then no hens. And then we found the feathers. Everywhere. Somehow Anne Shirley survived. She's physically unharmed, but understandably shaken after whatever happened during the night. If you've been following along, you know these hens were more than livestock to me. They each had their own personalities, their own quirks, and they brought so much joy to our little farm. I know many of you loved them almost as much as I did. For now, Anne Shirley has a safe place to sleep while we work on making the coop more secure and install an electric poultry fence around the coop area. This is a difficult video to share, but I wanted to be honest about the realities of keeping animals in the country. Sometimes farm life is beautiful, and sometimes it's heartbreaking. Thank you for caring about these sweet hens and for following along on this journey with us. If you've experienced a loss like this, I'd love to hear how you moved forward.
