Interpretation of Al-Fatihah - Dr. Musa Shuman Al-Siddiqi Al-Shadhili Episode (1) Names and Virtues This surah has several names. The abundance of names indicates the honor of the named, and the numerous names for this blessed surah are evidence of its honor, a fact upon which there is no disagreement. It has more than 20 names, including: 1- The Opening of the Book and the Opening of the Qur'an, because the Book, which is the Qur'an, begins with it. 2- It is the Mother of the Book, meaning the Mother of the Qur'an, i.e., the origin of the Book, because it is its opening and beginning, as if it were its origin and source, and it contains its objectives. It has gathered the objectives of the Qur'an, and because it summarizes what the Qur'an contains in detail; the entire Qur'an is a detailed explanation of what it summarizes. This is a brilliant opening, because it is like the introduction to a sermon or a book. 3- It is the Surah of Praise, because the Almighty, Blessed and Exalted, began it with praise, in His saying, "All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds." It is also the Surah of Gratitude. 4- It is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses (al-Mathani) because it has seven verses, and it is called al-Mathani because its recitation is repeated in obligatory and supererogatory prayers. 5- It is the Sufficient Surah because it is sufficient in conveying all the meanings of the Quran. 6- It is the Complete Surah because it is a substitute for other surahs, and nothing can replace it. 7- It is the Foundation because it is the basis upon which the Holy Quran is built. 8- It suffices a person in many matters, such as intercession for the deceased in the funeral prayer and reciting supplications for the sick. 9- The Surah of the Magnificent Quran. 10- The Surah of the Treasure. 11- The Surah of the Request, Supplication, Inquiry, and Conversation. 12- The Surah of Entrustment, beginning with the words, "You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help." 13- It is the Healing, the Curative, or the Protective Surah, and it is the supplication that heals by the permission of God Almighty: A group of the Prophet's companions (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey until... They descended upon a tribe of Arabs and asked for hospitality, but they refused to host them. Then the leader of that tribe was stung, and they tried everything to cure him, but nothing helped. Some of them said, "If you go to these people who descended, perhaps some of them might have something." So they went to them and said, "O people, our leader has been stung." We tried everything for him, but it was of no use. So, does anyone among you have anything? Some of them said, “Yes, by God, I can perform ruqyah (spiritual healing), but by God, we asked you for hospitality and you did not host us. So, I will not perform ruqyah for you until you give us a fee.” So they made peace with them over a flock of sheep, and he went forth spitting on it and reciting (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds), and it was as if he had been released from his bonds, and he went forth walking without any ailment. He said, “So give them their due which they made peace with them over.” Then some of them said, “Divide it.” The one who performed the incantation said, “Do not do that until we go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and tell him what happened, and see what he commands us.” So they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what had happened. He said, “How do you know it was an incantation?” Then he said, “You have done well. Divide it and give me a share with you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed. Shu’bah said: Abu Bishr told us: I heard Abu al-Mutawakkil say this. 14- It is a light, and no prophet before Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was given it: On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them both, he said: “While Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he heard a sound from above him. He raised his head and said: ‘This is a gate of heaven that has been opened today, and it has never been opened before today.’ Then an angel descended from it and said: ‘This is an angel who has descended to earth, and he has never descended before today.’ He greeted him and said: ‘Rejoice in two lights that have been given to you, which no prophet before you was given: the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatihah) and the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.
