Mad Dog Trail Review | Technical Off-Road Trail in Cherokee National Forest

Take on one of the most technical short trails in Cherokee National Forest in this Mad Dog Trail review near Tellico Plains, Tennessee. Also known as Forest Service Road 34 or the local “Guardrail Trail,” Mad Dog Trail is a roughly 3-mile off-road route just off the Cherohala Skyway. Unlike many graded Forest Service roads in the area, this trail brings steep climbs, off-camber sections, rock steps, tight brush, water crossings, and slick Tennessee clay that can change quickly with the weather. Driven east to west, Mad Dog Trail is more manageable, with downhill control and tire placement being key. Run from the western entrance, it becomes a much tougher challenge, rated around 5/10 or higher depending on trail conditions. High clearance, quality off-road tires, traction control, and a rear locker are strongly recommended.
