And so it was with Elías Crespin, the only living Latin American artist with a permanent work at the Louvre Museum in Paris. I met him in Margarita, he introduced himself to me, I was delirious with joy, we hugged, and he invited me to see his exhibition in Caracas, at the Trinidad warehouses. He himself explained his work to me. I went in and stood motionless, staring at the moving sculptures. I swear they're like Soto's penetrables, which dance in the wind or change when you pass through them, but Elías's works can't be touched. "What if a gust of wind comes?" I asked Elías. He laughed with that warmth that accompanies him and explained with all the delicacy, "Valen, that box you see up there is a computer. I studied computer science. It's pure mathematics applied to art to achieve those movements. It takes months of programming." I opened my eyes wide. I laughed in disbelief. I'm a little embarrassed by my ignorance, but at this age nothing embarrasses you, and I'm grateful for not having read anything by Elías Crespin and his work, so I can arrive as I did: an ordinary lady invited by a genius to see his work. I want you to join me on this tour, through the Continuum (2025) exhibition at Hacienda La Trinidad with Elías, who reveals details of his life and work. How did the invitation from the Louvre come about? How did he become interested in art? We talk about the shadow as part of our being, about the patience of creators, about his inspiration from great masters like Soto, Cruz Diez, and his grandmother Gego. Elías explains how the mechanisms of his works work: a magician showing off his tricks. He reconnects with Venezuela after two decades. He's happy because it allows him to ease his nostalgia and show his work back home. He says goodbye with an inspiring message about the spirit of Venezuelans. How does mathematics become poetry? Only a sensitive engineer like Elías Crespin can achieve this. The computer artist creates electrokinetic sculptures that seem to have a life of their own. The choreography of each piece evokes images and emotions that contrast with our archival images of nature. We create metaphors with the movement of the sea, the trees, the flapping of birds' wings, the transformation and change that surrounds us in our daily lives, and which goes unnoticed by the rush we live in. Contemplation is the protagonist in this episode dedicated to the first living Latin American to have a permanent work at the Louvre: L’Onde du Midi (2020).
