The salt flats of Araya are historic. They were exploited by the Dutch from the 1500s until the Spanish arrived in these lands and intervened to defend what they considered their property. It should be remembered that in times when refrigeration did not exist, salt was a treasure for preserving food. “La Fortaleza” was built to defend the salt and was demolished so that no one could use it when they had to withdraw. Centuries later, these salt flats determined the prosperity of this desert peninsula in the state of Sucre, one of the poorest in Venezuela. The vicissitudes of life have marked the salt flats of Araya, but today the situation is dramatic. A concession was granted to a group whose sole purpose seems to be to make money, even if it means destroying the salt flats. The most painful thing is that the inhabitants of Araya have been forbidden to extract salt, an ancestral trade practiced by their relatives for generations that they cannot even remember. Now they must sneak in, protected by the darkness of night, with their carts and shovels, in a procedure that is gentle on their salt flats, instead of machinery that destroys with impunity. And if we talk about the Ateneo de Araya, named Margot Benacerraf in honor of the filmmaker who won an award at Cannes with her documentary about the people of the salt flats, it is completely demolished. This is the story we want to tell, and as I don't want to be overwhelming, we will also have the plan of Francisco Pacheco, the legendary pilot of the Guacamaya helicopter, who after flying all over Venezuela decided to make his home in Punta Arenas, here on the Araya Peninsula, and obtain a concession to rescue the historical purity of Araya salt, once considered the best salt in the world. This story is intertwined with his extraordinary house, which he rents out to visitors, as does his neighbor Maggi, both located next to the beach in Punta Arenas.
