He was a maintenance crew member in the former Imperial Japanese Navy, working on Zero fighters, Shiden fighters, and other aircraft in Okinawa, and also assembling Ohka suicide attack aircraft. Later, he joined the Navy's ground forces and experienced combat with American soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. He wandered the battlefield without being informed of the end of the war, and was taken prisoner on September 2, 1945, the day Japan signed the instrument of surrender. The series also features episodes involving the then-governor of Okinawa Prefecture, Akira Shimada, and Senior Staff Officer Hiromichi Yahara. This episode tells the story of his journey from Sasebo to Okinawa aboard the coaler "Muroto," one of the transport ships in the convoy. Saegusa-san was assigned to the Southwest Islands Air Group (Okinawa area). He and his comrades set out from Sasebo for Okinawa. However, along the way, the collier Muroto they were on was torpedoed by the American submarine Seedock... This marked the beginning of a turbulent journey that was anything but straightforward.
