In this gentle morning prayer we slow down and remember that the favor of God over our lives was never something we had to earn. We rest in Psalm 5:12, where God surrounds the godly with His favor as with a shield, with grace before us, mercy behind us, and protection around us. We remember James 1:17, that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights. We sit quietly with Hannah at Shiloh, the woman who prayed so deeply only her lips moved, and the God who heard the prayer she could not even say out loud. And we receive the promise of Psalm 23, that our cup overflows and goodness and mercy will pursue us all the days of our lives. This is a prayer to open your hands to a Father who delights in surprising His children with kindness, and to walk into your day surrounded by His shield of favor.
