The great change of the 21st century comes with CRISPR, which makes gene editing cheaper and faster (up to 90% faster than previous techniques) and much more precise: Cas9 acts as a search engine that locates a sequence and allows cutting, deleting, or adding genetic code. This ease of access brings the promise of curing diseases closer—more than 3,000 are caused by a single incorrect letter—and is already yielding striking results in research: partial improvements in hereditary blindness, advances in the fight against diabetes and HIV, and trials against cancer, including the cure of a girl with an incurable form of leukemia in 2022. But it also opens the door to manipulating embryos, with changes that are inherited: in 2018, the birth of twins with DNA edited to protect them from their father's HIV was announced, a case condemned as premature and which resulted in the perpetrator being imprisoned until April 2022. If the technique is ever completely safe, the boundary between eliminating a disease and "designing" traits on demand will be the true battleground.
