¿Y si la humanidad dejase de dormir?

❓ What would happen if we never needed to sleep again? ✅ How could we achieve this? What consequences would it have for human beings and for society? Sleeping for 30 years in a 90-year life seems like a waste… until you understand everything that sleep “pays” for internally, and how difficult it would be to replace it without taking its toll. In this video, we explore whether it's realistic to reduce—or even eliminate—the need for sleep, and why current shortcuts fall short: drugs like modafinil can keep you awake, but they don't guarantee performance or offer a sustainable solution when we still don't fully understand why we sleep. Then, more futuristic options come into play, from brain stimulation with tDCS (with promising results in energy, concentration, and subsequent sleep quality) to gene editing inspired by rare mutations like DEC2, and others like ADRB1 or NPSR1, associated with "short sleep" without apparent consequences. And assuming we could one day live without sleep and without side effects, the impact would be enormous: a labor market reorganized into constant shifts, industries collapsing and others springing up overnight, and an uncomfortable ethical debate about who could afford such an advantage and what would happen in countries without strong labor rights. Furthermore, being awake for eight more hours would mean more food, more water, and much more energy—almost as if the world's population were to jump from 8 billion to 12 billion: a challenge that could only be met with less waste, greater efficiency, and a massive transition to renewables. Ultimately, the question isn't just whether science can conquer sleep, but what kind of world we would build if it does.
