She was the daughter of the famous Roman senator St. Pudens and the sister of St. Pudentiana. She had a great tradition of faith, having been fortunate enough to receive the Apostle Peter into her home. During the cruel persecution of Christians under the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Praxidis, along with her sister, provided refuge and comfort to the persecuted Christians. She took the bodies of the brave martyrs who were killed to the underground chambers (Catacombs) of Rome and buried them with honor. History says that she soaked up the blood of the martyrs with a sponge and stored it in a well. During that time when Christianity was banned, she turned her own palace-like house on the Esquilino Hill into a secret place of worship for the Church. During the height of the persecution, many Christians were arrested and killed in her house. She maintained her virginity despite the intense mental pain of seeing many believers killed before her eyes, and eventually became a martyr for Christ. Later, a large basilica called 'Santa Prassede' was built on the site of the secret shrine she founded.
