Born in North Africa, he was the first pope to officially use Latin for the liturgy. It was during his reign that the strong decision was made to celebrate Easter on the same Sunday in churches around the world. He fought bravely against false teachings and false doctrines and took an uncompromising stance in defending the truths of faith. In 199 AD, during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus, he sacrificed his life for the Church and was martyred.
