Why I Move the Ankle When I Work the Calf

Why the ankle might be the most important tool you're not using in your calf work — and the principle that changed how I approach tissue that isn't responding. In this video I walk through my approach to calf work, including why I start with minimal lotion, slow deep gliding strokes past the knee, and how I assess tissue density before deciding my approach. I show palm spreading technique on the calf and demonstrate what happens when I add ankle dorsiflexion — how it changes tissue tension, reveals layer separation between the gastrocnemius and soleus, and gives access that pressure alone can't reach. I also discuss pressure modulation through the popliteal fossa and how shifting medial versus lateral changes the tissue response. Useful for massage therapists working with clients who have calf tightness, Achilles tendon issues, lower leg tension, plantar fasciitis, or restricted ankle mobility. This video focuses on changing variables rather than adding pressure when the tissue isn't responding. #massagetherapy #deeptissue #calfrelease #calfmassage #massagetechnique #clinicalreasoning #palpation #ankledorsiflexion
