We - Ameya, Mangesh, Sanket, Manas, along with Grishma and Kaustubh, set out to explore a side of Goa that many people miss… the deep connection of Marathi language, Konkani culture, and history shaped by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Our first stop was a humble yet legendary place — Shailesh Restaurant.Here, breakfast wasn’t just food… it was culture served on a plate. Watanyachi patal bhaji, mix bhaji, kadak pav, poi, garma garam Chaha, and mirchi bhaji simple dishes, but full of authentic Goan soul. But what truly made this place special was the person behind it. An 80-year-old owner, honored with multiple awards by the Goa government, who once performed powerful roles like Aurangzeb in Marathi theatre plays like The Oshalala Mrutyu. Even today, he personally cooks and serves food keeping the old Goan canteen culture alive. From there, we moved towards the peaceful islands of Goa crossing the Mandovi River on a ferry to reach Chorao Island.The journey itself felt like stepping into a quieter, untouched Goa. On this island, we visited the historic Saptakoteshwar Temple — a temple deeply connected with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.It is believed that Shivaji Maharaj himself led the restoration (जीर्णोद्धार) of this temple during his campaign in Goa. Inside, we also saw a stone inscription that speaks about this very restoration — a silent but powerful proof of history. After experiencing history, we moved towards something equally rooted — Food.At Tato Kulagar, we experienced a true farm-to-table lifestyle. Here, in a lush garden with nearly 1000 trees, everything served on the plate comes directly from the land around you. We enjoyed traditional dishes like mangane, pineapple sasav, bangda, and prawns curry — every bite fresh, local, and deeply connected to Konkani roots. But this wasn’t just about eating… it was about creating.We even made Donne with our own hands — a sweet dish made using rice paste, filled with jaggery coconut stuffing, wrapped in leaves and steamed. A simple activity, but one that connects you to tradition in the most beautiful way.
