Clean, peaceful, and deeply spiritual — but what stood out was the simple canteen food. Idli, vada, sheera, upma… basic dishes, but served with that temple warmth which makes everything taste better. From there, we moved to Shantadurga Temple. Another serene space, where we experienced a wholesome lunch at the temple canteen. No luxury, no show-off — just pure, sattvic food and a feeling of calm that stays with you. Our final temple stop was Gomateshwar Temple — completing a spiritual circuit in Ponda. But this episode wasn’t just about temples… We then headed towards what is known as Ponda Fort. Or rather… what used to be a fort. Because today, there are almost no visible remains. Just a name, and silence. While trying to shoot there, we were told that filming isn’t allowed — and that’s where the story took an unexpected turn. We met a local person who connected us to someone special — an antique collector and historian. And that’s where things got real. Through him, the forgotten history of this place came alive. He told us how Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his appointed commanders challenged the Portuguese rule, how they defeated and even killed the Viceroy. And because of that, the Portuguese completely destroyed a fort called Mardangad — a fort believed to be one of the very few built by Sambhaji Maharaj himself. Not just destroyed… erased. They didn’t even leave the stones behind. Those same stones were later used to build a bridge over a river. And even that bridge was partially destroyed when the Portuguese were leaving India. Today, only fragments remain — a broken structure, scattered stones… but if you look closely, you can still see the carvings. Silent evidence that once, this was a fort. And somewhere between these ruins and stories, we found ourselves talking about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, his vision, and the legacy that still shapes places like Goa. Because history doesn’t always live in monuments… sometimes, it survives in stories told by the right people.
