SEGUNDO REINADO: ECONOMIA | Resumo de História do Brasil para o Enem
📚 Free e-book with summaries of the most common topics in Humanities, Languages, and Writing: http://bit.ly/2XkPac8 The second Brazilian reign (1840-1889) emerged in a context of crisis. While the early coming of age of Pedro de Alcântara was a liberal maneuver to increase their political influence, it was also the result of the unity of elites who feared losing their privileges. This fear was justified, since many revolts during the Regency period were popular and challenged the social order. In the elites' view, only a strong government could prevent the country from these insurrections. Ironically, the end of the Second Reign did not come from the popular classes, but rather from sectors close to the political elite. During the longest-lasting government in the history of independent Brazil, there were "parliamentarism," revolts, international wars, industrial booms, and even the abolition of slavery. Description: 00:00 - Today's class is about the economy during the second reign and will be divided into three parts: coffee, cotton, and the industrial boom. 00:14 - After brazilwood, sugar, and gold, Brazil's main export will be coffee. Coffee grown here supplied more than a third of the coffee consumed worldwide in the 19th century. Its entry into this territory occurred during the Regency period, but it was during the Second Reign that it gained prominence in relation to other crops. 00:35 - The country's main coffee plantations were located in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, with emphasis on the Paraíba Valley region of São Paulo. Enslaved labor was directed to this sector, but with the Brazilian government's decision to gradually abolish slavery at the end of the Second Reign, this reality began to change. 1:27 - This change occurred due to the adoption of policies prohibiting the slave trade and encouraging European immigration to Brazil, with the aim of gradually replacing enslaved labor and whitening the Brazilian population. Concurrently, production expanded to western São Paulo. 2:29 - Coffee came to represent more than half of our exports, with the USA and Europe as its main consumer markets. Due to this economy, a vast railway network was established in the Southeast region, serving to transport the product, as well as people and tools for the crops. Furthermore, the communications system was also modernized with the development of the telegraph. 4:27 - Between the 1850s and 1870s, there was a period of industrial growth in Brazil, with investments coming, in part, from profits obtained from coffee production. Consequently, several areas underwent urbanization, such as São Paulo, where large mansions were built by the so-called coffee barons, as well as a modern apparatus for the comfort of these wealthy families. 6:19 - Cotton had been important to our economy since the colonial period, being cultivated primarily in the Northeast. However, it had its moment in the 1860s, given that its largest producers were from the southern region of the United States and were experiencing hardships due to the Civil War. As a result, Europe began importing Brazilian cotton until 1870. 7:38 - The Mauá Era (1850-1870) was a peak period in industrial development that was subsequently interrupted. Understand how this impacted our economy.
