While the early coming of age of Pedro de Alcântara was a liberal maneuver to increase their political influence, it was also the result of the unity of elites who feared losing their privileges. This fear was justified, since many revolts during the Regency period were popular and challenged the social order. In the elites' view, only a strong government could prevent the country from these insurrections.
