ENG Welcome to the Feast! Enjoy Padre Antonio Soler’s villancico from our 2020 holiday program, An Iber-American Feast ! Soler was the resident organist and choir master at the San Lorenzo del Escorial monastery near Madrid. His piece Un ángel y el demonio [an angel and the devil] is a festive villancico turned cantata. This work in particular is a ‘villancico de personajes’—essentially a miniature Spanish Baroque comic opera! In lieu of the usual street/common characters, Soler pits an angel and the devil in a fiery vocal exchange.
