Salas was a Cuban classical composer and the Chapel Master at the Santiago de Cuba Cathedral. Similar to Francisco Courcelle, Salas fused the traditional villancico form with high-church Italian idioms, and his sacred cantata El cielo y sus estrellas [the sky and its stars] is a perfect example.
