UPDATE 12 - BRIBIE ISLAND RESTORATION DRONE UPDATES | mullet escape sharks, birds and boats.
Hey everyone, welcome back for another update. This week’s island update is a slow one with no activity happening while the plants take root and grow — honestly, it’s like watching paint dry ha ha — but there were still a few moments worth sharing, especially with mullet season in full swing. Some people have asked for some footage of the beach further south of the breakthrough #3 area so I have included some in this update. MULLET SEASON MADNESS Over the week I filmed two massive schools of mullet exiting the Pumicestone Passage, and both of them managed to slip past the mullet nets and boats lying in wait. Always wild to watch and cheer on when they make a clean escape to the ocean. The first school was spooked by a curious family on a jet ski and pushed them right over the shallow sand bar. When they spread out, you really get a sense of just how huge the school is compared to when they’re packed tight in a bait ball. They didn’t get far before a squad of pelicans and a local osprey moved in for an easy feed. The second mullet ball powered past the mullet boats, dodged the shark nets at Kings Beach, and headed out toward the Shelly Beach reef into deeper water — only to run straight into a few sharks who took advantage of the moment. Maybe sharks aren’t big fans of mullet, because they didn’t stick around long. BAR CONDITIONS The bar is still shallow, still directional, and still shifting. Nothing dramatic this week, but definitely something to keep an eye on. OFF TO THE CAPE AGAIN - Attempt #2 For those following the bigger journey: a few weeks ago I tried to head up to Cape York, but van issues forced me to turn back from Townsville (half way). The good news is everything’s now fixed, and with the season perfect for travelling north, I’m gearing up for Attempt #2 this week. I’ll be droning the whole way, capturing whatever I can, and sharing updates as I go. If you’re still keen on the adventure, stick around — I’ll be filming for a few weeks before returning. And while I’m away, if anything happens on the island — wildlife, erosion, changes, anything at all — feel free to email, DM, or text me so I can stay up‑to‑date. When I’m back, I’ll plug straight in and continue the documentation. Thanks for watching Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy and don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for future updates!
