Master Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals gathers eclectic wisdom, adaptation, observation, and valuing life from Chancellor Lü Buwei's great pot of many schools; hear marking the boat to find a sword, covering ears while stealing a bell, and learning to walk in Handan, and carry away a few lines like the boat moves, do not carve the mark. Outside the gates of Xianyang hung a freshly finished manuscript, with chests of gold piled beside it. Whoever could change a single character would receive a thousand in gold. The man who hung the book was prime minister of Qin, yet his origins lay in the market stalls of Handan, where he had traded goods for profit. A man who rose through buying and selling wanted to compile a great book on governing the realm, and invited the whole world to find fault. Many people know only the phrase a thousand gold per character, without knowing the editorial method behind it: listen to every school a little, blindly follow none. The book's chief editor was Lü Buwei, a late Warring States figure who became Qin chancellor. In Handan he met Prince Yiren, hostage in Zhao, and said: this is rare goods worth hoarding. He helped Yiren return to Qin and take the throne, becoming chancellor himself with three thousand retainers, including men like Li Si. The book was collective work: retainers wrote, he edited and signed. It runs more than two hundred thousand characters in three blocks: twelve records, eight surveys, and six discourses. The twelve records follow the months and seasons; the eight surveys look down on the realm; the six discourses tighten specific themes. You need not chew the table of contents like hard bread. Your first gate is eclecticism. Confucians speak benevolence, Daoists speak nature, Legalists speak punishment, Mohists speak universal care. Lü Buwei said: invite them all, keep what works. This is gathering the hundred schools, not muddy compromise but minutes after a long argument. Behind the mix is service to Qin, like a CEO with a think tank writing a white paper. The book also asks how righteousness and profit sit together: lasting profit needs righteousness people can trust. If you tug between quick money and sleeping soundly, Lü Buwei stands on the side of sleep. When hearts scatter, profit cannot last either. The second core is adaptation: follow the time, borrow force, do not wrench the world. Marking the boat to find a sword comes from here: a Chu man crossed a river, lost his sword, carved a mark on the boat, then searched at the mark while the boat moved and the sword did not. The world moves; if you guard an old mark, you fight yourself. Lü Buwei borrowed a throne, borrowed pens, borrowed names. Ordinary people can adapt too: ask who is skilled, which rule is mature, which wind is rising, then step. The third is observation. Covering ears while stealing a bell: you think others cannot hear because you refuse to hear. Listen to words, observe deeds. Examining transmission warns that lore is not archive. Before you forward a quote because ancients supposedly said it, pause one second: is it original, or a later mouth? The fourth is valuing life: one life, do not trade it for empty fame. The fifth is careful orders: if you say no candy again and always give candy, the order dies. The sixth is using the many: listen widely, not only to the loudest voice. Harmony means many tones making music; governance means grinding many views into policy, very unlike the later burning of books. Stories abound. Learning to walk in Handan until you forget your own walk and crawl home: learn from others, do not lose yourself. A Chu man loses a bow and says a Chu man lost it, a Chu man will find it: do not let one object steal your peace.
