Master Huainan's Annals gathers heaven, transformation, life, time, the Way, governance, and balance from Prince Liu An's starlit hall between the Huai and Yang rivers; hear Nüwa mending the sky, Hou Yi shooting the sun, and the old man who lost his horse, and carry away lines like leave one sun and let fortune turn in time. Once ten suns hung in the sky. The earth cracked from heat. Hou Yi shot down nine and left one, so day and night and the four seasons returned. You have probably heard this tale. But who first wrote it down with full seriousness? Not a textbook footnote, but a feudal prince two thousand years ago, with thousands of retainers gazing at stars, simmering myth, philosophy, nurturing life, and statecraft into a vast eclectic book. Many people know only Nüwa mending the sky and Hou Yi shooting the sun, without knowing the method behind them: how to live well inside a changing cosmos. If you heard our episode on Master Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals, you may remember Lü Buwei's great pot of schools. Master Huainan's Annals sounds like Qin's echo in Han. The pot remains. The fire changed, with less command-now urgency and more watching heaven and seasons. Lü Buwei asked how to govern the realm. Liu An asked how heaven and earth took shape and how a person should live. The nominal master is Liu An, grandson of Han's founding emperor and uncle to Emperor Wu. He held the title King of Huainan. His capital was Shouchun, in today's Huainan area of Anhui. Histories say he loved reading, esoteric arts, and keeping scholars. Retainers reportedly numbered in the thousands, including the legendary Eight Sages. The book was collective work under the prince's name, leaning Daoist yet holding Confucian, Legalist, and yin-yang shadows. Later readers class it among the eclectics: not messy, but wide enough for both looking up and looking down. The work has twenty-one essays in inner and outer chapters. Your first gate is tian, heaven, as running pattern, not cloth overhead. Treatises on Astronomy and Terrain draft the world and stand you in the cosmos first. Closely joined is ren, the human. Correspondence between heaven and human means conduct should answer season and order. Liu An's wuwei is not lying flat. It is not wrenching against heaven. You are not the center, yet not irrelevant dust. Between heaven and earth there is a seam where you may walk. The second core is hua, transformation. Nüwa smelted five-colored stones when heaven collapsed. The world can be repaired. Read with Hou Yi shooting nine suns and leaving one: order broke with ten suns; balance returns with one. The lesson is too much and too little. Gonggong ramming Mount Buzhou explains a tilted world. Jingwei filling the sea and Chang'e on the moon hold stubborn will and longing that outlive form. The third is sheng, life. The Annals returns again to valuing life, cherishing the body, and nurturing spirit. After survival comes living longer and lighter, not dragged to death by outer things. Opposite stand things and desire: moderate, do not let desire chase its tail. Immortal tales and elixir lore surround Liu An, yet the divine stays far and the body stays near, as near as this breath tonight. The fourth is shi, time and season. Spring generates, summer grows, autumn gathers, winter stores. Human hearts need rhythm too. Liu An speaks of adapting to time and waiting for time. The old man at the frontier who lost his horse is the serial drama of fortune turning: loss may be gain, gain may be loss, lameness may save a life when invasion comes. What you cannot solve at night, let turn in time. The Treatise on Qi Customs admits different speech and dress, yet similar hearts. Custom may change; the Way does not. The Treatise on the Forest of Sayings strings fables like waiting by a stump or adding feet to a snake, often with sigh more than sneer.
