Mao Zedong kept Rongzhai Suibi for a lifetime — not a war manual, but forty years of Southern Song notes by Hong Mai: doubt history, watch details, judge people a little later. Hong Mai, courtesy name Jinglu, also called Rongzhai, came from Poyang in the Southern Song. His father Hong Hao was detained for years as an envoy to the Jin. Hong Mai passed the jinshi exam, served in the Hanlin Academy and local posts, and saw both court wind and frontier cold. The book has five collections — Suibi, Xu Bi, San Bi, Si Bi, Wu Bi — seventy-four juan across roughly forty years. Not finished in one push. Lived, thought, and noted along the way. The rounder they look, the more you keep a watchful eye. Rongzhai looks for seams. • Reading people and yourself: skip empty labels like loyal or treacherous. Ask whether someone keeps their word, and how they choose under pressure. Also glance in the mirror: when busy, do your words sharpen? When you want to win, do you pick evidence selectively? • Office life and measure: position can twist honesty; fewer true words, swollen judgment. In doubt is not thrilling, yet it protects judgment and sleep. Leaving one inch leaves a doorway for truth. • Poetry and taste: fitting means word and meaning sit together; not fitting means words show off. Resumes need evidence; poems need feeling — do not cook them in one pot. Beauty and truth can sit apart; arguments cool. • Posture of learning: willingness to correct moves more than knowing much. Forty years of notes revise along the road — I can be wrong, I can change, then reading continues. Tiny upgrades stack; people steady. • Worldly texture: customs and objects keep how people lived. Anxiety is rarely brand new; only props change. See the shape, and do not be scared by the shape alone. • Sincerity and falseness: sincerity is inside and outside roughly matching.
