Prison, still writing? Book of Han Ban Gu Liu Bang Wu Su Wu #BookOfHan #bedtime #BedsideBookVoice

Ban Gu kept writing in an Eastern Han prison cell and finished China's first dynastic history of the Western Han alone—from Liu Bang's rise to Wang Mang's usurpation. Bedside Book Voice walks the Book of Han: how an empire's institutions and temperament took shape. The Book of Han runs one hundred twenty chapters and more than seven hundred thousand characters, covering only the Western Han—two hundred ten years from the High Emperor Liu Bang to Wang Mang. Ban Gu came from a family of historians; his father Ban Biao argued that Sima Qian's Records mixed the Han portion too thinly with all earlier ages and deserved its own book. Halfway through, Ban Gu was jailed for privately altering national history; his brother Ban Chao petitioned for mercy; the emperor valued his talent, released him, and appointed him Keeper of the Orchid Terrace to compile state history. Ban Gu died on campaign before the final draft; his sister Ban Zhao sorted the papers and invited Ma Xu to supplement tables and biographies—a household bound by honor to write the Western Han clearly. The form keeps annals, tables, treatises, and biographies but drops the Hereditary Houses; twelve annals for twelve emperors, eight tables aligning lords and ministers, ten treatises on calendar, rites, food and money, penal law, geography, and astronomy, seventy biographies of generals, ministers, Confucians, knights-errant, favorites, and the Xiongnu. Sima Qian made annals-and-biography history live; Ban Gu changed the knife to a finer horizontal slice of one dynasty. Later Twenty-Four Histories mostly follow one dynasty per book, and the line runs from the Book of Han. Listen tonight without memorizing the table of contents—follow the voice as an empire rises from the grasslands and slowly takes shape through institutions, people, and choices. • Ban Gu and Ban Biao: why the Western Han deserved its own book • Ban Zhao finishing the draft: a woman's crucial relay in historiography • Dynastic history versus general history: Records as long rope, Book of Han as single volume • Annals, tables, treatises, biographies: faces in biographies, skeleton in treatises • Tables of officials: locating names and political moments like a timeline • Annals of the High Emperor: from pavilion chief to entering the pass • Xiao He seizing statutes and maps: rules and face together at founding • The great wind rises: bold and lonely early Han temperament • Rule of Wen and Jing: the terrace not built, Ti Ying and abolishing body punishments • Emperor Wu: Zhang Qian westward, salt and iron monopolies, elevating Confucianism • Ji An facing down Wu: frank ministers and shrinking political space • Su Wu: nineteen years at the Northern Sea, staff held though tassels fell • Wei Qing and Huo Qubing: striking the Xiongnu and the cost of expansion • Jia Yi: seeing cracks in a rising empire, talent cut short • Treatises on food, money, penal law, geography: how the imperial machine runs • Xiongnu and Western Regions: defining us and them beyond the wall • Huo Guang regent: power, consort clans, and Emperor Xuan's revival • Wang Mang usurping Han: accumulated ills, failed reform, Green Wood and Red Eyebrows • Ban Gu's autobiographical preface: one historian's answer for one dynasty • Idioms born here: follow old rules, cast aside the brush for the sword Read against the Records: on Liu Bang, Sima Qian stresses legend and character; Ban Gu stresses early Han institutions and legitimacy. On Emperor Wu, one book stresses personal longing and immortals; the other stresses expansion, salt and iron, and Ru ritual. Su Wu, Zhang Qian, Huo Guang, and Wang Mang can stand for integrity, distance, power, and change. Ban Gu loves turning points and contrasts; narrative carries judgment without lecture. Tang scholar Yan Shigu's commentary made the Book of Han the standard for studying Han institutions; much of how we say Han ethnicity, Han script, Han culture traces to this one volume. Reading history means hearing not only what ancients said but where the Eastern Han writer stood when looking back at the Western Han. If these nights help you, subscribe to Bedside Book Voice and tap the bell—we can meet again when you pick up the Book of Later Han. Good night — see you in the pages.
