#10 Voltaire on the E8 (Kleve-Kalkar/Kehrum, D)

First of a 2-day hike from Kleve to Xanten in Germany following the E8 long-distance footpath (linking Ireland to the Polish-Ukrainian border). Last year I hiked the Dutch Grote Rivieren footpath (LAW 6, 286 km) ending in Kleve and the E8 takes it further into Germany. The part from Kleve to Kehrum (24 km) starts from Kleve’s beautiful city park at the Kermisdahl, an old Rhine river arm, and brings you through fields and forests to Kalkar and nearby Kehrum. On the way you pass the funeral monument of Johann Moritz Prince of Nassau-Siegen (1679) and you walk the Voltaire Weg (a historic 8 km footpath) that traces an old postal road to Schloss Moyland. The famous French philosopher Voltaire took this route in the 18th century with Prussian King Frederick I. From the Schloss the path continues to Kehrum. 0:04 Kermisdahl 1:58 Moritz monument 2:20 Voltaire Weg 4:36 Schloss Moyland 6:01 Reaching Kalkar 7:40 Tarmac to Kehrum @deutscherwanderverband @komoot @stichtingwandelnet Wanderbares-deutschland.de Wanderverband.de Wandelnet.nl #hiking #walking #wandelnet #wandelen #wanderweg
