Stop Using the Wrong Backhand (Do This Instead)

Struggling to know when to use a backhand flick vs a backhand roll? In this CCC, I work with Yonnie on understanding the difference between these two shots — and how to execute each one correctly. Her biggest issues were: • Not bending her knees enough • Poor ready position • Paddle tip being out of position • Using too much wrist on the backhand roll Because of those issues, both shots felt inconsistent and hard to control. We broke down the mechanics for both the backhand flick and the backhand roll, focusing on when to use each shot and how the mechanics differ. We worked on: • Better ready position and paddle prep • Staying lower through contact • Proper paddle tip positioning • Using less wrist on the roll • Creating acceleration and velocity on the flick • Keeping the paddle in front of the body For the flick, we focused on starting from the correct prep position and accelerating through the ball while maintaining control. For the roll, we focused on shape, stability, and letting the body work instead of flicking with the wrist. Once those adjustments clicked, both shots became much cleaner, more controlled, and easier to differentiate in real points. If you struggle deciding when to flick vs roll - or your backhand attacks feel inconsistent — this breakdown will help simplify both shots.
